Roofing

Roof replacement, done to a standard.

When a roof is past saving, the answer isn't just new shingles — it's a complete, sealed system built from the deck up. Here's exactly what a Handyhands roof replacement includes, the warranties behind it, and how it works whether you're paying out of pocket or through a storm claim.

When replacement beats repair

A good roofer doesn't sell you a roof you don't need. If a leak comes down to a few lifted shingles or a tired flashing detail, the honest call is a repair — and we'll tell you that. Replacement is the right answer when the problem is the whole roof, not one spot on it.

Generally, it's time to replace when the shingles are near the end of their service life, when granule loss is widespread and the mat underneath is exposed, when there's storm or hail damage across the field of the roof, when leaks are showing up in more than one place, or when patch after patch has stopped holding. At that point, repairs are just buying time at a rising cost — a complete system replacement is the better dollar.

The only way to know for certain is to get on the roof and look. We do an honest inspection first, show you what we find, and let the roof make the case — not a sales script.

If you don't need a new roof, we'll tell you. We'd rather earn a repair customer today than sell a replacement nobody needs.

What a complete-system replacement includes — layer by layer

Most of what makes a roof last is the part you never see. A shingle-only install hangs new shingles over whatever's underneath and calls it a roof. We install the complete GAF system on every roof, from the deck up, because a roof is only as good as the layers beneath the surface. Here's the full build, in order:

  • Deck inspection & re-nailing to code — before anything new goes on, we inspect the wood decking, replace what's rotted or soft, and re-nail the deck to current code so the whole assembly is sound.
  • FeltBuster synthetic underlayment — a tough, tear-resistant synthetic that lays flat and sheds water, not the old 15# felt that wrinkles, soaks through, and tears.
  • StormGuard ice & water shield — a self-sealing leak barrier applied at valleys, penetrations, and the vulnerable edges where leaks actually start.
  • Purpose-made starter strips — proper factory starter at the eaves and rakes, sealed and aligned, so the perimeter resists wind uplift instead of relying on cut-up field shingles.
  • GAF Timberline HDZ shingles — installed with LayerLock technology and a 6-nail pattern, not the 4-nail minimum, for a stronger hold and the wind coverage the system is rated for.
  • TimberTex impact-resistant hip & ridge caps — purpose-built caps that finish the hips and ridges and protect the most exposed lines of the roof, instead of bent field shingles.
  • Balanced ventilation — calculated intake and exhaust, with ridge vents where the roof allows, so heat and moisture move out of the attic instead of cooking the roof from below.
  • New flashing & full magnetic nail sweep — brand-new flashing at every wall, valley, and penetration (never re-used or re-caulked), and a magnetic sweep of your yard and driveway when we're done.

Every roof gets all eight steps. That's the standard — not the upgrade.

Your shingle and upgrade options

GAF Timberline HDZ is the architectural shingle we install as standard, and it's an excellent roof for most Houston homes. The standard HDZ system is a great roof on its own — there's no pressure to upgrade. But if you want to step up, there are two options worth knowing about:

  • GAF Timberline UHDZ — a step up from HDZ with an even larger nailing zone for installation accuracy and a richer, more dimensional profile on the roof.
  • GAF Timberline AS II (Class 4) — a Class 4 impact-resistant shingle built to better withstand hail. Because it's impact-rated, it may qualify you for an insurance premium discount with some carriers — worth asking your insurer about.

We'll walk you through what each option looks like and costs on your specific home — no pressure, just the trade-offs.

The warranty stack behind your roof

A complete-system roof is backed by more than one warranty, and they cover genuinely different things. We don't blur them together — here's exactly what you get, and what each one means:

  • GAF System Plus — a registered manufacturer warranty from GAF covering the roofing materials themselves.
  • GAF WindProven — a limited wind warranty with no maximum wind-speed limit, available because we install the qualifying GAF system components the right way.
  • Handyhands 10-year workmanship warranty — our own guarantee on the labor and installation, so the people who built your roof stand behind how it was built.

Material coverage, wind coverage, and workmanship coverage are three separate protections — and the warranties are earned by the build, not just printed on a brochure.

What to expect on replacement day

Most residential replacements wrap up in a small number of working days, weather permitting — the exact time depends on the size, pitch, and complexity of your roof, which we'll go over after we've seen it.

The day itself follows a clear order: we protect your landscaping and the areas around the house, tear off the old roof down to the deck, inspect and re-nail the decking, then build the new system layer by layer — underlayment, leak barrier, starter, shingles, hip and ridge, ventilation, and new flashing. When the roof is done, we run a full magnetic nail sweep across your yard and driveway and walk the property so you're not finding debris for weeks.

We keep the jobsite clean and we keep you in the loop. You'll know what's happening and when.

Financing your roof

A roof is a big-ticket purchase, and not everyone wants to pay it all at once. We offer financing so a replacement can fit your budget rather than forcing you to wait while the roof gets worse.

If you're filing a storm-damage claim, financing can also bridge the gap — for example, covering your portion while the claim works through to completion. Ask us and we'll lay out the options honestly.

Storm-damage replacements & insurance

A lot of Houston replacements aren't out-of-pocket projects at all — they're storm-damage claims. Wind and hail damage is often a covered peril, and we specialize in the insurance side of roofing: an honest inspection, thorough documentation, attending the adjuster meeting with you, supplementing legitimately owed items the first estimate missed, and handing you a documentation packet for your records and renewal.

We won't promise a specific claim outcome — no honest roofer can. What we will do is make sure your damage is fully documented and fairly represented, and that the roof we build to settle the claim is the same complete system we put on every home.

If you think your roof may have storm or hail damage, the full claim process — how to file, working with your adjuster, RCV vs. ACV, supplements, and more — lives on our Insurance Claims hub.

Questions, answered

Common questions

How do I know if I need a full replacement instead of a repair?

If the damage is isolated — a few shingles, one flashing detail — a repair is usually the smart, honest call, and we'll tell you so. Replacement makes sense when the problem is the whole roof: widespread granule loss, storm or hail damage across the field, multiple leaks, or a roof near the end of its service life. The only sure way to know is an honest inspection, which we do before recommending anything.

What exactly is included in a roof replacement?

Every Handyhands replacement is the complete GAF system from the deck up: deck inspection and re-nailing to code, FeltBuster synthetic underlayment, StormGuard ice & water shield at the vulnerable areas, purpose-made starter strips, GAF Timberline HDZ shingles installed with a 6-nail pattern, TimberTex hip & ridge caps, balanced ventilation, all-new flashing, and a full magnetic nail sweep when we're done. All eight steps are standard on every roof, not optional upgrades.

How long does a roof replacement take?

Most residential replacements are completed in a small number of working days, weather permitting. The exact timeline depends on your roof's size, pitch, and complexity — we'll give you a realistic estimate after we've inspected it.

What warranties come with my new roof?

Three distinct warranties: GAF System Plus (a registered manufacturer warranty on the materials), GAF WindProven (a limited wind warranty with no maximum wind-speed limit), and our own Handyhands 10-year workmanship warranty on the installation. They cover different things — materials, wind, and labor — and you get all three.

Can I upgrade from the standard shingle?

Yes. The standard GAF Timberline HDZ is an excellent roof, but you can step up to Timberline UHDZ (a larger nailing zone and richer profile) or Timberline AS II, a Class 4 impact-resistant shingle that may qualify you for an insurance premium discount with some carriers. There's no pressure to upgrade — we'll show you the options on your home.

Do you offer financing for a roof replacement?

Yes, we offer financing so a new roof can fit your budget. It can also help bridge your portion of a storm-damage claim while the claim is being completed. Ask us and we'll go over the options.

My roof was damaged in a storm — will insurance cover the replacement?

Wind and hail damage is often a covered peril, and storm-damage restoration is our specialty: we inspect honestly, document thoroughly, attend the adjuster meeting, and supplement legitimately owed items. We can't guarantee any specific claim outcome — no honest roofer can — but we make sure your damage is fully documented and fairly represented. See our Insurance Claims hub for how the full process works.
